What is DTS?

The Discipleship Training School emphasizes heart transformation and character development, not just the accumulation of knowledge. In essence, it is an intense missions training program that focuses on developing a lifestyle of passion for Jesus and compassion for the world. It is a journey to discover the heart of God and learn His ways.

The six month Discipleship Training School is separated into two parts:

Part One: The Lecture Phase, which includes:

The first 12 weeks of the school. You will be discipled together with others from all over the world who are also passionately seeking God’s heart. Each week we bring in a different speaker to teach on subjects like:

  • Nature and Character of God
  • Father Heart of God
  • Missions and Evangelism
  • And many more subjects for a total of 12 different weeks that will challenge you to go deeper in your relationship with God!

Also weekly you will experience time alone with God, intercession /prayer times, classroom instruction/lectures, small group interaction, one-on-ones with your small group leader, language acquisition & cultural training, community outreach, fellowship with speakers, staff & other students, worship, and free time to process all that God is doing!

During  the DTS lecture phase we emphasize a Christian community where young men and women from many different nations can come and grow in their love for God and His work. Here a YWAM Vancouver we seek to grow in our relationship with each other and with the Lord as each speaker comes and teaches more about who God is on each week of the Lecture phase. We also emphasis family style eating. Because Vancouver is so multinational, we have the ability to cook and eat great food from all around the world . . . and we do! We value community style eating. What this means is we daily sit together and share meals, from the newest members of our community to the oldest.

At YWAM Vancouver we also have a special emphasis on urban missions. To quote one of urban missions greatest pioneers (Dr. Ray Bakke) “the Bible began in a garden but ends in a city”. Vancouver is a city where you can interact with a mash of different cultures and demographics, with about 180 countries represented in the 2 million people that call Vancouver and its surrounding areas home. Come and experience God in an urban setting as you learn more of who He is and then share what God has taught you to others! There’s no better place to see God’s heart for people and echo’s of God’s nature in the nations, than where peoples and nations are gathered, and Vancouver is one of those places!

A message from our Base Director and DTS leader, Mike Davies:

Some would say Vancouver is a city that’s got it all. In fact, Vancouver is consistently voted one of the most desirable places to live in the world. However, there is another side to our city. Vancouver is one of the least churched cities in North America, and the percentage of Christians here is lower than many parts of the ‘unreached’ world. We of course have easy access to the gospel, but it has been rejected by many. Because of this we desire to see those who have a passion for Jesus come to Vancouver and share God’s love here, but we also feel the Lord has called our ministry to more than just Vancouver.

A word the Lord spoke to us a couple of years ago was: “The more people you bring to Vancouver, the more you will see sent out”. This is one of our goals, to see hundreds if not thousands of people sent out from Vancouver to the ends of the earth. If you feel the Lord has put a particular place or ministry on your heart, then we want to see what God has spoken come about in your life. We need to see our city re-evangelized, to see a new spiritual awakening, this is why we want you to come and join us in this significant time.”

Part Two: The Outreach phase:

The DTS outreach is an eight to twelve week adventure that provides students with the opportunity to apply the truths from lecture phase and to truly find their place in world missions. The cross-cultural outreach is an amazing experience as you share God’s love with those who you meet on outreach!

Your life will be changed as you step out in faith to share the Good News through things such as: playing with children, praying for the sick, talking with university students, being the example of Christ to students as you teach English, and so much more. Currently, our main strategic focus is Indonesia. This region represents one of the neediest places on the planet for the Gospel.
